My Project

Students with special needs sometimes have difficulty conveying their feelings, but through theater, students have many ways to show their emotions. My students are high school-age students with moderate to severe special needs. I am a theater teacher and have been putting on musicals with my students for the past 5 years. Many of my students come to school only to be in the musical.

In this musical students have a chance to express themselves and explore their mental health in many different ways, such as singing, dancing, art, and much more.This school year we are going to be performing a musical in March of 2025.

Every student will be a part of this musical, no matter their disability. Some students will be making props with vinyl, tote bags, and tumblers. Some will be setting up the stage with the balloons and flags and others will be setting up the tablecloths for our cast party following the musical.

During the cast party, students will explain how they have grown and what they have learned during our time practicing, setting up, and performing this musical. This musical is a wonderful chance for my students to learn about their feelings and express themselves in ways they usually don't have the chance to do anywhere else.
