My Students

Science is abstract. Models make it feel real. Often it’s a challenge for my students to conceptualize some scientific concepts because Science study involves very small/large or dangerous objects. In order to help my students visualize these objects they need glue and markers to build models.

My students range from 13 to 20 years of age, boys and girls who speak a variety of first languages.

They attend an urban high school within the poorest region of the city. 21.7% are English learners, and 99% are economically disadvantaged, and receive free or reduced price lunch. Education is a means for changing these students' lives. They learn better using visuals. Students whose first language is English have mixed abilities. Due to budget cuts, the school does not supply materials like paper and other stationary. It becomes a challenge to provide multiple assignments to support the different learning abilities and styles. These students depend on technology for source of information, and socialization. “Sit down and listen” approach to instruction cannot sustain the students attention. Instruction needs to mimic their fast interactive environment from their technology tools. Multimedia resources within Google classroom provide a more engaging learning environment.

My Project

My students will be able to build apply scientific information and build models to represent their understanding. For instance, given the atomic number of an element they should be able to develop an atomic model of that element. They will also be able analyze and synthesize scientific information and compile an artifact to represent their ideas. Glue, markers and printed resources will support them in these endeavors. I use Google classroom to support instruction. In most cases, students have to watch multimedia resources that I include to support class activities. It is a challenge to use external speakers with more than 25 students in class. The headphones will provide a favorable environment during these activities because I can lend those students without personal headphones.

It will be easier for students to conceptualize complex scientific concepts using models.

The development of these models is engaging and thought provoking. Multimedia applications within Google classroom are interesting and more captivating for the learners because it appeals to different learning styles. Students also work collaboratively and develop team skills. Most of my students cannot afford to print their work at home can use laser printer in class.
