My Project

I teach 8th-grade students who are at a critical stage in developing empathy and understanding of the broader world around them. While they are curious and eager learners, empathy is an area they often struggle with, especially when it comes to understanding the experiences of others who have faced unimaginable suffering. The Holocaust, a topic many of my students are unfamiliar with, offers a unique opportunity to challenge them to think deeply about the impact of hatred, persecution, and injustice.

By reading Night by Elie Wiesel, my students will engage with a firsthand account of the horrors faced by Holocaust survivors.

This personal narrative will help them not only learn about the history of the Holocaust but also develop a deeper understanding of the human impact of these events. My goal is for them to connect emotionally with the survivors’ stories, fostering greater empathy and a better grasp of the enduring effects of trauma.

The books I am requesting will allow all my students to explore this critical moment in history through the eyes of those who lived it. I want them to make personal connections to the material, reflecting on how the events of the Holocaust still shape our world today. This project will not only deepen their historical knowledge but also help them develop the empathy needed to recognize injustice and stand up against it in the future.

What makes my students special is their growth potential. At this age, they are beginning to form their values and perspectives on the world. I want to help them see the importance of understanding and remembering the past to create a more compassionate and just future.
