My Students

My students attend a New York City Title I school in Brooklyn. Every day, our school warmly opens its doors (or logs on) to a highly diverse group of fifteen hundred middle school students from every corner of the borough and the world. Mandarin, Spanish, Arabic, and Russian are just some of the languages you might hear walking down the hall, or in the school yard. Our administration has worked hard to create a compassionate environment where differences are accepted and celebrated.

Within our Social Studies curriculum, my colleagues and I encourage our students to think of the “big picture” by examining the evolution of historical events, as well as, different cultures to discover how they have influenced to our present-day world.

Each class I teach has its own unique variety of learning levels. For this reason, it is important to provide materials that are not only comprehensive but encourage students to become independent problem solvers and critical thinkers rather than just receivers of information.

My Project

The first unit of every year centers around geography and the components of maps. For my project I would like my students to complete a geography project-based learning activity. Project-based learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working over an extended period of time to research and respond to an engaging question, problem, or challenge.

Our goal is for all students to engage in transformation and differentiated learning experiences.

Building a strong foundation from the geography unit is important because that knowledge is referenced when introducing each additional uni. Geography and map lessons involve basic classroom supplies. My students truly enjoy these activities but there are not enough supplies to go around. Minimal materials result in less hands-on or long-term activities due to time restraints.

I want my students to have ownership and a responsibility in their learning materials. I would appreciate your help in providing my students with individual country profile posters. Through these posters my students will be able to document all they have learned throughout the unit about their country’s geography, history, government, economy, and culture. I would also appreciate the opportunity to have dry-erase U.S. desk maps for my students, so they are able to learn more about our country.
