My Project

I love my job as a Reading Specialist. I work with students in grades kindergarten through 6th grade who are below grade-level in reading. It is so rewarding to watch a struggling reader meet with success and begin to feel like a "real" reader. These decodable books and passages will be great resources for my intervention students to apply the phonics skills they are learning.

My primary goal for this project is to allow my struggling readers to hold real books (not just worksheets with passages) and apply their reading skills.

I want them to feel like successful readers who are able to read an entire book on their own! The decodable books will help them reach this goal. The Orton Gillingham books will allow my students to apply their phonics skills with the option of highlighting the learned patterns right in the texts. These books will be used during my instruction, and the decodable readers will be used after the instruction for authentic practice.

My students are special because they have the right to be literate, just like all the other students in the school. My students are struggling readers for a variety of reasons, but with the right tools and instruction, they can be successful, life-long readers.
