My Students

The Bronx Lab School opened in September 2004 as a small new school within the New York City Department of Education. Bronx Lab was founded in partnership with two organizations, the Institute for Student Achievement and FEGS Health and Human Services. We occupy space in the Evander Childs campus complex, and are one of 6 small new schools that replaced a phased-out Evander Childs High School.

To prepare for college and life, Bronx Lab School students engage in meaningful and contextual academic work, participate in a nurturing community, explore their passions, and learn to value effort as a means to success.

My Project

Every Student Every Day is the BLS attendance improvement initiative. We know that good attendance ensures academic progress and success. Absences, excused and unexcused, easily add up and often lead up to our students falling behind on their school work, and to stress and/or acting out in the classroom. Chronic absenteeism disrupts learning. We want to encourage and support students who are working toward the goal of being here every day.

Our school community will band together to promote the message that we want to support and help every student be here every day.

We will work together at identifying attendance goals and use incentives to reward their achievement of those goals. We have identified a bulletin board space in the school to publicly acknowledge these students. We will announce students monthly in town halls. Students will get vouchers to chose from an assortment of edible items when they meet their short term attendance improvement goals.
