Support Elementary Student Mental Health In South Los Angeles

My Project

Students from our south Los Angeles neighborhood face a myriad of environmental challenges including deep poverty, structural racism, and inter-generational trauma. The supplies I am requesting are to support students' mental health by creating a calm environment and offering wellness incentives.

The rug and rocker chairs will give students a welcoming place to sit and calm down.

The rug sweeper will keep the space clean and safe. The fidgets, calm strips and SEL books will provide pro-social activities and incentives to support emotional regulation.

The snacks are for kids who come to school hungry which exacerbates emotional dysregulation. Providing snacks will support students to feel satiated so they can regulate and return to their academics. These supplies will create an environment of safety and calm in the counseling office.

For many of our students, school is the safest place they experience because of its predictability, the access to food, and access to safe adults. Giving students a clean, calm space and a chance to pause and regulate so that they continue with their classwork has proven to lead to positive outcomes for student academic success. However, funding is scarce when it comes to mental health/ SEL supplies. Funding this project will make a huge difference in the lives of kids who are often forgotten and overlooked.

The students at our elementary school are bright, creative, and charismatic. While many lack access to basic needs, they are kind, loving, and resourceful. Emblems of resilience, our students teach us that the human spirit can always find ways to persevere when given a nurturing community.
