Support Building Thinking Classrooms in Elementary Math

In supporting my Building Thinking Classroom project, you will be able to help me support my students build a community where they are free to represent their thoughts and opinions in a collaborative manner. This will allow them to develop as critical thinkers and problem solvers in mathematics. The stickers, play doh and sensory items will be used as motivators and rewards for out of the box thinking and participation. White boards, markers and sticky notes will be used to make thinking and feedback visible.
As a math specialist for my elementary school, I help facilitate intervention and new learning experiences for teachers and students.
It is my hope to use these materials to help kick off building thinking classrooms in the school I work in. It is my hope that in starting this new project students will develop perseverance in problem solving that will carry over to other areas of life.
Knowing that motivation enhances accelerated learning by fostering engagement, persistence, and active participation I will be using some of these items such as stickers, play doh and sensory items as rewards for students who successfully work hard participate in the Building Thinking Classroom Model. The sticky notes will be used for students to provide their peers with feedback during gallery walks, consolation activities, etc.
These resources will help my school to kick off Building Thinking Classrooms. It will help immensely to support students' social-emotional needs, we must create a positive and inclusive classroom environment, encourage open communication, teach emotional intelligence and provide opportunities for collaboration in all areas of education. Building Thinking Classrooms is a way to foster this in the Math block. I hope to be able to collaboratively work with teachers and students to kick this off with the right resources.
