This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager 6th, 7th and 8th graders that deal with issues and are unimaginable to many adults.

Although my students deal with many stressors, they still come to school and try to do their best. They need socio-emotional supports to help them address their emotional needs; however, as a first year school counselor in a high needs middle school in the South Bronx, I have noticed that my students are not accustomed to counseling and I need additional resources in order to best engage my students. My students need these resources during their school counseling sessions so that I can help promote their emotional and mental health and in turn, they can tackle their academics.

My Project

The resources I am asking for aim to help further engage my students during individual and group counseling sessions. Counseling games and art therapy are excellent methods to use with children who are weary of counseling. Counseling games, such as manipulatives like conversation dice and discussion jars with an assortment of questions, allow students to lower their guards and to actively discuss issues that may seem difficult. I have also noticed that creating art based activities also allow students to to open up. Arts therapy is very efficient, especially with children who struggle expressing themselves. Through art students can express themselves while feeling successful. Along with these supplies and games, incentives such as mechanical pencils, a hot commodity amongst middle schoolers, encourage students to continue striving towards positive change.

My students come from needy neighborhoods and they have seen and endured events that are difficult.

They need the support of a school counselor in order to help them become successful. Like Michelle Obama mentioned during last year's ASCA Annual Conference, school counseling is not a luxury, it is a necessity. It is even more important in urban settings in order to ensure that all students develop the social and emotional skills that are needed in order to be successful in today's society
