This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I recently came across a quote comparing books to food, with the idea that some of it "surely passes through you" while others become your "flesh and bones". I think about this quote frequently, with a critical focus on the information I feed my children's brains.

At the beginning of the year, I asked parents what their hopes and dreams were for their children.

Many spoke to academic goals, but they focused overwhelmingly on character development. They want their children to be responsible, to persevere through challenges, and to be resilient in the face of setbacks. I use this information to inform my teaching, carrying a lot of those conversations into my everyday lessons.

My Project

I will use these books during our daily read alouds, but the lessons will extend far beyond that block. We have a "character trait of the month" focus, including persistence, resilience, leadership, diversity, and mindfulness. These characteristics were identified in partnership with with students, families, and school leadership. The books I have requested in this project will help me develop these traits, and many are multicultural in nature.

There is currently an enormous diversity gap in children's books.

37% of the US population are people of color (100% of my classroom), yet only 10% of children's books contain multicultural content. Not only will this project help build character, but it will also help me incorporate my students' various cultures and identities into my curriculum.
