My Students

My students overcome obstacles every day that might seem simple to the average person. I get the joy of teaching students with multiple disabilities; including physical, cognitive delays and intellectual disabilities such as down syndrome and autism.

Despite their disabilities, my students are funny, creative, smart and caring towards each other.

We are a specialized school within the NYC Dept. of Education located in Queens. Each day in our classroom is an adventure filled with opportunities to learn and grow. My students need materials to help increase their independence and communication.

My Project

My classroom has currently opened up a vocational program that helps support them through community engagement. We gather flyers from the grocery store and shop for the people in our school community. In order to provide more people with our services, We need these supplies to help put together individual folders.

Our students use these folders to identify the person they are purchasing items for and use one to one correspondence once they are at the grocery store.

Upon returning home, they deliver the groceries throughout the school community.

This vocational program helps support community expectations, social/emotional targets and improves communication skills as well as literacy and math skills.
