Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm a 4th grade teacher in the Milwaukee Public Schools system.
My students come from broken homes, foster homes, and low poverty areas.
Many are faced with challenges that I've never dreamed of. 100% of my school is free lunch, and all students also receive breakfast for free. Most of my students come from Spanish speaking homes. Many of their parents do not speak English at all. My students are the ones teaching their parents the English. They thrive for learning and show me their S.W.A.G. --Success, Willpower, Attitude, Goals--daily. They take pride in their success and their learning each and everyday, no matter how hard life is outside of my classroom.
My Project
We do not do a lot of paper pencil work in my classroom, therefore, we are constantly using our whiteboards and dry erase markers during lessons and even when reinforcing lessons. We often run out of markers because of the demand for using them multiple times throughout the day. We also go through a lot of cleaner for our white boards, since they are constantly being used.
With this surplus of dry erase markers, my students and I are hoping to fulfill the demand that our classroom has for the use of dry erase markers during learning.
I make a lot of engaging, hands-on games for my students to play during literacy and math. I have also started making them for other subjects as well. I print their materials on both colored paper AND white paper, then laminate the pieces and organize.
Having the colored paper can help them differentiate the pieces and the type of game.
Making 1-3 copies of each game can use a lot of paper and be costly. Often, I have to cut back because the paper supply diminishes so quickly.
With this supply of paper, my students and I are hoping to not have to be limited to the amount of engaging, hands-on activities that they so eagerly desire.
