My Project

I am a special education math teacher in a public high school in downtown Manhattan. This upcoming school year, I will be teaching Algebra I and Geometry in an Integrated Co-Teaching Classroom. We are still seeing the effects of the COVID lockdown in classrooms. Students are more hesitant to engage and talk with their classmates than before the pandemic. We are hopeful that incorporating supplies that will make school more fun and enjoyable will help students to feel happy and successful, especially in math class, which is a difficult subject for many students.

I am asking for some items that will hopefully make my classroom a more enjoyable and aesthetic place to learn - including classroom decor (like lights and neon signs), prizes for rewards (like stickers, candy, and tiny stuffed animals), buzzers for academic review games, and fun pens and markers that make taking notes more fun.

We are asking for privacy shields to help support students' ability to remain focused during assessments, as many students struggle with anxiety during tests and quizzes, and a quiet and secluded space to think is very helpful. Furthermore, we are asking for an oil diffuser to so that we can utilize relaxing essential oils to further promote students' ability to de-stress. Sometimes the smallest thing - like a colorful marker instead of a pencil - can just give students the little boost of fun and enjoyment that they might need to refocus themselves in a given class period. Decor like string lights and neon signs gives a more relaxing vibe to the classroom, and also helps us to not have to rely on harsh florescent lights as much. We are hopeful that with these small additions we will be able to make our math classroom even more fun this school year!
