My Students

My 5th grade students are hard-working children from low-income backgrounds. Many of them have never traveled further than their local supermarket (though we live in a large urban city), but they are motivated by the world "beyond."

They are eager learners and – when inspired and active –are interested in their future success.

My students are still beginning to understand that they are part of a larger community and ecosystem and look for ways – through problem solving, design, and their own interests – to create a better world for themselves.

My Project

My students love working on their daily "By Heart" challenges. By the end of 5th grade, students should be able to fluently multiply multi digit numbers. The daily "By Heart" challenge allows students to work their way to and beyond this skill throughout the year.

Mastering math facts is more engaging with a dedicated folder and a way to track progress immediately.

I provide each student with a folder, tracking page, white board marker, and page protector. Each day they work on their personal challenge in the folder and track their progress toward their goal. By the end of the year, most students have completed the challenges and are beginning to master 6th grade skills. For those that don't complete the goal, they are still able to see the significant progress they made throughout the year. The "By Heart" system is completely engaging for all students and effective toward mastery of math facts.
