My first grade students are very engaged kids with a need to learn and grow. They see themselves as future 2nd graders. I teach reading, writing, and social studies in ESL. We focus on learning how to become great readers and opening our eyes to the multiple worlds that we can travel through books.
95% of my students come from very large families supported by low incomes.
Many of my students come from household where money is extremely tight and lack basic necessities. A lot of my students have their immediate family members in other countries like; El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico. With everything that is happening around us, virtual learning is a little difficult. For a lot of my kids, school is their safe haven.
My Project
I love to give the students opportunities to learn in different ways. For example, for our writing block in adjectives, we create collages using magazines and newspapers. For projects like that, I included glue sticks. In social studies we paint facts about the person or event that we are learning about. For projects like that, I included card stock. For reading and writing we publish non-fiction books! For projects like that, I included laminating sheets All of these things require specific supplies. I want my students to experience different approaches to learning. We are about to embark into a whole new year and most of these supplies will not only be used this year, but next school year as well. Help me give my student's these basic supplies to make their 1st grade ESL classroom and amazing, rigorous, creative learning environment.
