This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My class is full of bright-eyed, beautiful African American children. The majority of them are low-income and many of them are coming to kindergarten already behind. They are ready and eager to learn new things and to have new experiences.
Our school is located in the city of Detroit and we are a Title I school where all of the students in the school qualify for free lunch.
Many of our students eat breakfast at school as well. This is the beginning of their educational experience and I want to make sure they have everything they need to be successful.
My Project
The materials that I have ordered are for diversity related projects throughout the school year. These items are crucial for students to begin to see the diversity within our community. We will be using the people shapes project, the colored paper, the multicultural crayons and gel pens as we explore our similarities and differences through art. Students will create images of themselves, their friends, and family. They will explore different types of families through the use of our children around the world puzzles as well as multicultural family puzzles. Children will learn tolerance and acceptance of different kinds people through our continued use of literature about people of color as well as people with differing abilities, which will be coupled with art projects using the various multicultural crayons and people shapes.
These materials will be continuously used throughout the school year as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American History Month, Black History Month, and Women's History Month.
Students will also have the opportunity to use the multicultural families puzzles, the costumes, as well as the people of differing abilities throughout the school year during our literacy stations. As the school year progresses we will continue to use our multicultural crayons in all of our art work which will lead students to begin to see that people are made of all different shades and colors and all are beautiful.
