Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Picture a classroom full of supplies that the parents spent almost all of their money on. Now picture them without a place to put them. Our parents struggled to put together the supply lists but now the Kindergartners cannot get the materials themselves and foster their independence.

This class is bursting with light and energy.

About 75% of the class are English Language Learners who are smiling and excited to come to school every day. Their homework is always complete and checked by the parents, because they WANT to do the work. The students cannot wait to have a book in their hands to read like storytellers and share with their reading partners. They emulate every adult that walks into the room because they want to be like the positive role models these educators have become in their lives. We are from a high-needs neighborhood where classroom supplies are a struggle to purchase. However, this class has made the effort to afford these things. That's dedication! We are in a K-5 building, but unattached in a mini-building. The classroom doors are always open and we invite families to come and do activities with the children during the day. We pride ourselves in preparing the students for a bright and successful future.

My Project

In our classroom, we need organizational supplies such as these! We need a paper cutter to help create projects for 25 (sometimes more) students, a construction paper center that the students can reach and use themselves, and a mail center. These are all part of the way we're going to help these Kindergarten students foster their independence. We teachers are not reimbursed for the school supplies that we must buy for the classroom. This year, I have been purchasing books out of pocket for the students to read. As long as we can read, write, and complete math, science, and social studies, I hope to better educate them to a successful future. Two important components are missing: speaking and language. Our class contains 75% English Language Learners. We want to foster speaking and communication, as well as independence! We need these supplies to ensure that time in Kindergarten is promoting independence and a classroom community of efficient learning.

I wouldn't normally ask for these sorts of supplies because they are part of the classroom.

In order to promote the independence of the students, I am requesting them. My students are so happy to be in school, and I want to make their classroom their home. Please help make their future as bright as the smiles on their faces!
