My Students

My school is a Title 1 school, and 98% of my students receive free lunch. We are a 5th Grade inclusion classroom. My class is focused on building social skills and academic knowledge. My students are learning how to manage disagreements and learning how to build knowledge through academic discussions and learning ownership. We've come a long way to learn how to work together as a community of learners, and we are proud of our achievements. Even so, my students have limited life experiences. Most of them rarely leave our neighborhood, and I know how important it is for them to be exposed to diverse and different ways of thinking. These are kids who have so much potential, but they need positive venues for that energy. I witness how proud they are when they accomplish classwork or help a classmate. Still, we can do better. I know that there is room to grow as learners and as members of our community.

My Project

We are a high poverty school with a very diverse population of students of all backgrounds but we do not allow that to affect the quality of the program or equipment our students are exposed to. We want the best for them and they deserve it.

In order to help my students learn the new content better, I ask them to complete different projects which involve writing and applying some important rules.

I always encourage them to use their imagination and be creative. With loose leaf, markers, pens and pencils, mathematics will come to life for these students. My idea is once they complete the projects in a creative way, we post them on the wall and hopefully the lessons will stick to their minds.

I have many students that come to school hungry.

Coming from a community where the average income is $8,000, many of my students' families cannot afford basic necessities. Many students stay after school for additional help. They always ask for it and I would like to reward their hard work and love for mathematics.
