Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello Donor! I am a second grade special education (bilingual) teacher working in a high need community school in the Bronx, NY.

I am writing this proposal because there are certain materials that the children need that we currently do not have. These include ink and paper for the classroom printer. Sometimes, lessons and materials from the curriculum my school uses just are not enough for my students. They need worksheets or different materials that I find from the Internet in order to learn. I also use the ink and paper to print out Spanish language materials that I use for native language instruction. The stapler will help put together the materials for the children and will also help my paraprofessional and I to decorate the classroom bulletin boards, instead of taping up the work. I am requesting a classroom clock to reinforce the concept of time, since the clocks all around our school are digital and the children need to see how an analog clock works. The activity timer will help keep us all on track (including me) with our lessons. I find that sometimes, I stick with a lesson for a little too long because I want to make sure that the children understand what I am trying to teach, but I lose too much time in the process.

The library pockets will help us keep track of the books that are being borrowed from the library. Rest mats may sound like a strange request for a second grade classroom, but many of the children in our class are bussed and wake up at 5:30 AM just to get to school on time. Other children take medication that causes them to be sleepy in the morning. These children find it hard to focus in the mornings and some times, I allow them to take a 20 minute nap on our rug while I check homework or conduct a morning meeting at the front of the room. When I see a child curl up their little sweater to make a makeshift pillow, it breaks my heart to see them napping so uncomfortably on the flat floor. I think these mats would allow them to be more comfortable.
