Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a low-income neighborhood with limited resources and have varied sensory, emotional and learning difficulties. In order to develop a strong balance system, children need to move their body in all directions! Movement and exercise help children stay organized, develop their nervous system, improve coordination, and create lifelong healthy habits! Unfortunately, due to financial difficulties, their living arrangements are not ideal. My students often spend hours inside small, crowded apartments with minimal opportunities to move around. Therefore, when at school, their energy levels range between lethargic to super energetic.

My Project

Our room often serves as a release for students whom receive speech/language services. They sometimes come by to take a break when stressed by classroom demands. As one youngster sweetly said: "It's hard to think when your body is attacking your brain!" I believe he meant to say his nervous system was inhibiting him from sitting still and concentrating.

Children often fidget to get the movement their bodies so desperately need.

It helps them get ready to learn! Yet, when we ask students to sit still & pay attention all day long, it’s inevitable their brains sometimes “fall asleep.” Fidgeting is an indicator they are not getting enough movement throughout the day. Bean bags are excellent ways for students to get sensory input and become "Whole Body Listeners!" They provide a chance to get their wiggles out, while completing class work. My students love using bean bags during reading activities, break time, and/or working on the carpet. These tools show reading goes hand in hand with comfort & enjoyment; which will help them be lifelong readers. Unfortunately, they are ripping at the seams and worn out.

In order to continue such flexibility and engagement, we need colorful supplies! It’s amazing how motivated a child becomes when their work is printed on colored paper instead of regularly used white paper. I create many resources for my students and bins will ensure they're stored safely for years to come. Finally, the board game and jumbo spinner will enhance our therapy experiences! They will be wonderful motivators and reinforce several skills including vocabulary, play, and turn taking; necessary learning components for our kids!
