My Students

The mission of our school is to develop its students to be knowledgeable, productive members of a global society through an education that promotes cultural awareness, skillful use of information, personal renewal, and both individual and community path-finding for the twenty-first century.

My students are inquisitive, engaged scholars from all over the world.

They speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, Somali, Albanian, Toishanese, and Amharic. Most are English Language Learners, many have special needs, and almost all live in poverty.

They are curious, thoughtful, funny, and kind. They do their part every day to be present in their learning, and they deserve the opportunity to explore and grow in a nurturing environment that is both challenging and fun.

My Project

It's January, which means that my 6th and 7th graders are about to embark on their second semester of learning and creating. It also means that our art supply closet needs some serious restocking.

While our school community is supportive of the arts, our "studio" is a shared classroom with no sinks and not much space for getting messy.

Therefore, we depend on mostly dry materials, and lots and lots of cleaning wipes!

Our young artists will use these materials to create a portfolio of projects that will include studies of pattern and texture inspired by West African Sowei masks, observational drawing in the tradition of the Dutch Masters, and political poster designs expressing their hopes for their neighborhood, nation, and planet.

We need glue sticks and scissors to make the Process Journals that we make to keep our sketches and writing for the semester. We need permanent markers and compasses to draw and color Zentangles, which are complex and detailed designs on our book covers. We will use the pencils and erasers to sketch out our ideas before going over them with Sharpies.

At the end of class, our room turns back into a Spanish classroom, so we need disinfecting wipes to clean up quickly between periods.

Thank you for supporting these innovative scholars in their mission to explore and share their ideas with the world!
