My Students

I work at an ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse Chicago Public School. With almost 800 students from Pre-K to 8th Grade, three-fourths of the population comes from low-income households. The majority of our students are minorities, and recently we have seen an influx of refugees.

My middle school students are not only obtaining a safe, nurturing learning environment, but they are also finding their voice.

Their exuberance, gumption, and tenacity compel me to give them the necessary tools needed to be powerful thinkers, writers, and speakers. I absolutely love coming to work every day because my middle schoolers inspire and motivate me. In return, I hope my passion for education is instilled in them.

My Project

Oh the daunting task of teaching writing! Far too often I have students who sit and stare at blank pages, at blank screens, unsure how to start, weary of making mistakes. Students are constantly told what to write and what needs fixing, which is the fastest way to make them despise writing.

In our Writer's Workshop students get opportunities every day to write about anything they feel passionate about.

Their ability to be in control of what they write about motivates them to give it a try. We need supplies to make this happen: notebooks for generative and free writing, sticky notes to explain which entries they trust me to read, and different colored pens for revising their work.
