This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am so lucky to be a teacher in a small school community. For being a school in a city as big as New York, it is wonderful to be in a place that has a small school feel. There are only a few classes per grade. The sense of community that is felt between and across the grades is truly amazing. Our students adore our school community and they wear their school T-shirts with pride. These past few years have been tough, but our students have been as resilient as ever.

Since these few years have been such a challenge for everyone, my school has decided not to ask families to provide school supplies for their children.

School supplies can be very costly for families and requiring them to spend extra money on a huge amount of supplies didn't feel right.

These are supplies that students need to succeed. Things like dry erase boards and markers are a crucial way for them to show their mathematical thinking during math time. Staplers, tape, and paper are all things that students need during writing workshop. They use these materials to write, revise, edit, and publish their writing. Colored pencils are used during note taking for reading and writing workshop, as well as projects across all content areas. Pencils, erasers, and Sharpie markers are things that students use all day, everyday, in all of their content areas. As you can see, these basic supplies are things that my students use on a everyday basis and this year, they just will not have their own. This is where my project comes in. I want to be able to supply them with these materials so they can be excited to learn and so they can succeed as scholars in their third grade year.
