My students are really special to me for many reasons. I have a wonderful group of students who come from diverse backgrounds that make them unique. Being engaged in their own learning is crucial for ensuring their success. Many of my students are unable to bring in their own school supplies. I know that they learn best through active and meaningful experiences that they can connect across the content areas and to their own experiences.
I know my students' learning style and that learning by doing is essential for them because it is so highly motivating.
Unfortunately, most of the enriching experiences my students encounter are within the school walls because my students live in high poverty situations. An organized learning environment is essential in order for my students to be able to create freely! My students deserve to learn in the best way possible and that is providing the most welcoming atmosphere is extremely important. I believe that providing them with the materials they need aides in their success.
My Project
In order to effectively utilize class time and engage students in learning as they walk through the front door of our classroom, my goal is to provide all basic supplies needed for them such as pencils, pens, tape, cardstock paper, and sheet protectors. My students carry their items in their backpacks; they do not have lockers. The time students spend cycling through their backpacks to dig out supplies is critical class time that could be used in order to maximize learning experiences. Providing my students with supplies gives them one less thing to worry about during the school day and encourages them to focus on their learning instead of external factors that they might be going through.
My group of middle school students learn best by working through hands-on learning scenarios with their peers.
This is why it is of the utmost importance that supplies are plentiful and easily-accessible for students, so they can freely create. Many of my students come from low income homes and it is hard for them to bring in supplies needed to set them up for success. If these supplies are provided for them, their time can be spent on learning and not worrying. My goal is to provide all supplies for my students so that they can focus on their academic and social development.
