I teach English to 10th graders at a public high school in Central New York. Approximately 50% of the students here receive free or reduced lunches and about 10% speak a language other than English at home.

This year the English Department is offering a new course to 10th graders who need additional help in English. These students will receive an extra class period of English each week so they can get the help they need in mastering their reading and writing skills. Although we are creating a new course, there aren't extra supplies available and unfortunately, funds are limited. Many of these students do not have the means to purchase new school supplies, including pens and paper.

To engage my students and continue to keep them interested in writing, they need new writing supplies. Pens and paper are necessities. Highlighters in cool colors and brightly colored folders to organizer their written work are essential in keeping them excited in the writing process. Flip chart paper will give us the opportunity to edit together and give the students confidence in their writing abilities.

Your help will make it possible for my students to strengthen their writing skills so that they can pass the state assessments and go on to college.
