My Students

I am an ESL teacher in Worcester, MA at a low-income, high-need elementary school. I teach English Learners in grades 2-6 that all have varying native languages and different levels of English language proficiency. In my experience working with English Learners I have found that they are hungry to learn and to become bilingual and multilingual speakers.

My students are eager to come to school each day and better their English skills as they often become the translators and liaisons for their own families.

Our main focus is to boost each student's literacy skills. We do not have access to many materials at my school as the Worcester budget simply does not allow. Having a supplies such as chart paper, markers, and crayons in my room will allow me to provide thought out and supportive activities. Having these resources in the classroom will provide experiences that these students most likely will not have outside of school.

My Project

Due to the minimal budget in Worcester, classrooms are lacking important school supplies such as scissors, whiteboards, clipboards, markers, student rewards, chart paper, and colored pencils. My students need these schools supplies to enhance daily lessons and provide them with the important tools that they need to succeed.

The schools supplies listed in my project will impact my students in countless ways which will be essential to their success as young learners.

We will use the clipboards and whiteboards/dry erase markers for our work on the rug so that my students can hold up their responses and work around the room, not just in their seats. The colored pencils will help my students to color code reading passages when they notice different parts of speech or figurative language. The class set of scissors will allow each student to cut out their vocabulary words for the week at the same time so that we are not losing time sharing one pair of scissors. Finally, the mini prizes will award their efforts in the classroom. Most importantly, my students will learn the importance of taking care of materials and understanding their value as tools in our classroom. Any donations are greatly appreciated!!
