Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 14 to 16 years old who attend high school at an urban, Title I school. All of our students receive free or reduced price lunch and over a third of students are identified as an exceptional education population. Despite all this, they are still eager learners, when their attention is focused. Our goal, as an entire school this year, is to encourage our students to love reading again.

Our building is old and resources are very limited.

Many students come to school without the proper tools and supplies to succeed. Our school district is rated among the highest generational poverty nationwide.

Teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction without the requisite tools to teach our students. Although, the opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population, they are all dreamers, and they all deserve the best!

My Project

My students deserve so much more than what is currently available to them. Everything that the district cannot afford to replace or buy tends to come from teachers' pockets. I do whatever I can to make sure my students have the proper resources in order to thrive in an English classroom and I still need your help!

This is my fourth year posting a back-to-school project for my students, and the purpose remains the same, to ensure that they begin the school year equipped with the materials to be successful.

The students are often shy about asking for materials as well; they would rather sit silently, be defiant, or become a class clown to avoid admitting they need classroom materials. They come into the 9th grade with different backgrounds, abilities, and reading levels, and I rely on these tools and supplies to make sure they are all set up equally and organized for the year. I need a variety of supplies to engage and motivate my students to succeed. They will use these binders and notebooks for English interactive activities throughout the year, and items like colored pencils, crayons, sharpies, expo markers, glue, and colored paper will help bring these lessons to life. In order to keep our classroom fresh and clean, we will also need supplies like tissues, disinfectant wipes, air fresheners, and hand sanitizer.
