Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are fourteen to sixteen years old, and attend high school at an urban, Title One school. All of our students receive free or reduced price lunch, and over a third of students are identified as an exceptional education population. Despite all this, they are still eager learners, when their attention is focused. Our goal, as an entire school this year, is to encourage our students to love reading again.

Students in my classroom often lack materials they need to be successful; our school district is rated among the highest generational poverty nationwide.

I am a first year teacher, and I have already found myself spending a significant amount of my own money getting my students the materials they need to be successful in our class. The students are often shy about asking for materials as well; they would rather sit silently, be defiant, or become a class clown to avoid admitting they need classroom materials. Finally, our school building, and the resources it provides-- such as cabinets, pencil sharpeners, and secure storage-- are nearing the 60 year mark. The district cannot afford to replace these items. We need your help!

My Project

My students deserve so much more than what is currently available to them. Basic things like a class pencil sharpener, highlighters, notebooks, and folders are necessities in my classroom in order for it to be successful.

I plan to do multiple activities with my students to enhance their skills in reading and writing, and these supplies would make all the difference.

I hope to engage them with exciting reading opportunities, writing practices, and other projects that will allow them to work individually and in groups. These materials will help my students and I get organized for our class and prepare us for successful learning.
