My Students
I teach first grade at a Title I school in West Harlem. Most of my students come from low-income families. My students are bright, motivated, and passionate learners. They are inquisitive children that devour anything and everything that piques their interest!
In my classroom, children's questions and interests drive the instruction.
We pay close attention to children's needs and how they learn best. Kids are always moving and talking. They learn through hands-on projects, games, and explorations. Our classroom environment is really important, because it serves as their third teacher.
My Project
My kids need a step stool to reach our classroom sink! We do tons of hands-on science, art, and cooking projects. Kids need to reach the sink to fill up water containers for painting, washing fruits and vegetables for cooking, and doing science experiments. After the fun is done, children help take care of our classroom by washing dishes, cleaning paint brushes, and rinsing out containers. They can't do any of these things unless they can reach the sink!
Children in first grade learn best in small groups where their individual needs can be met.
We need a portable white board easel for teaching these groups in different areas of the room. The white board will help us explain concepts, display charts, and explore ideas.
