My Project

This is the last class to come through who missed so much school due to COVID-19. They were in Kindergarten that year and it speaks volumes to how important that year was for them. I teach all of the kids, regardless of their abilities, so it's important that lessons are hands-on and highly engaging. Looking through my caseload this year is overwhelming for the needs of this group due to missing so much of Kindergarten. I will need much more than what I've asked for here in consumables such as cupcake mix and cookies. We drill into multi-colored cupcakes with straws to discuss the earth's layers and how they search for rocks and minerals to mine. We mine chocolate chips out of cookies and then put them back in to discuss reclamation. This would be a huge help for other activities such as building their own flashlights using index cards, foil, LED lights, and disc batteries as well as AA batteries for my electricity kits. We make roller coasters to discuss energy using paper folding and paper clips. We create Rube Goldberg machines using cups and paper clips. We measure and discuss the property of liquids using small cups. We grow plants from lentils for 2 weeks using regular-size clear cups. We design and build oil derricks using coated paper clips and straws. We use rubber bands for many other activities. We create fossils in our recycled milk cartons from lunch with Plaster of Paris and shells. Anything else I've asked for is for an organization or clean up of our engaging lessons!
