Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income school district, I see my students facing several challenges both in and out of the classroom. I am the 4th-5th grade, SLD Teacher at an inner-city school in Mid-City Los Angeles. Many of my students come from low-income backgrounds and often school items aren’t available to them because of financial hardships. Parents have to make the tough decision to pay a bill or put food on the table and forgoing school essentials that will help their children excel. My students are often many grade levels behind, nonverbal, but also full of many talents. Despite these many challenges, my students always come ready to learn.
My goal is for all my students to recognize and embrace their unlimited potential and realize their goals and dreams.
From the minute, they walk into the classroom, I focus on helping my students develop a growth mindset. We learn to embrace our differences and help spread disability awareness. By doing these things, I hope to empower my students to continue a path of academic excellence.
My Project
Due to having multiple grade levels, my classroom is set up in rotations to target their needs. My students often require repetition of skills and interactive, hands-on tools to retain academic knowledge. The whiteboards, markers, and charts would be used to practice CVC words, take notes during ELD, practice basic math concepts, and engage with the material. The whiteboard stands would help my students by allowing them to stand on their board to transfer information onto their worksheets. Obtaining the items for this project would tremendously help my students academically by improving the centers we develop in our classroom.
