This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income school district, I see my students face several challenges both in and out of the classroom. I am the 3rd-5th grade Autism Special Education Teacher at an inner-city school in Mid-City Los Angeles. Many of my students come from low income backgrounds and often school items aren’t available to them because of financial hardships. Parents have to make the tough decision to pay a bill or put food on the table and forgoing school essentials that will help their children excel. Special education is an already obstacle to face. My students are often many grade levels behind, nonverbal, but also full of many talents. Despite these many challenges, my students always come ready to learn.
My goal is for all my students to recognize and embrace their unlimited potential and realize their goals and dreams.
From the minute, they walk into the classroom, I focus on helping my students develop a growth mindset. We learn to embrace our differences and help spread Autism awareness. By doing these things, I hope to empower my students to continue a path of academic excellence.
My Project
Due to having multiple grade levels, my classroom is set up in rotations in order to target their needs. My students often require repetition of skills and interactive hands on tools to retain academic knowledge. The white board markers, stamps, letters, and laminating pouches would be used to laminate graphic organizers in order for my students to practice CVC words, practice basic math concepts, and engage with the material. They would be able to use the foam dices to roll different digits to practice place value. The activities and interactive programs provide different modalities for my students to express their learning. Obtaining the items for this project would tremendously help my students academically by improving the centers we develop in our classroom.
The use of technology would help my students dive into digital learning.
My students have access to a listening center however the headphones and earphones have started falling apart. With new headphones, they would be able to interact with the program Lexia in our school. Furthermore, two chrome books would help my students gain access to their System 44 accounts in order to take their reading counts quizzes. My students would also be able to use the Chromebook to practice typing skills for Smarter Balance testing. These items are essentials that will help bridge those missing pieces my students need in order to be successful in their grade level.
