My Students

We are the Chemists of Payneville. We will not help build the School to Prison Pipeline but we are groundbreaking in building the Science to College pipeline.

My school is categorized as one of the lower performing schools in the county and in need of extra support and assistance for our students, who all experience high levels of poverty, violence and educational inequity.

The majority of my students will either be the first or in the first generation of their families to attend college. Statistically, only 27% of them will graduate college within four years (compared to 42% of students whose parents graduated from college). But not the Payneville Environmentalists, we all aspire to go to college.

My Project

Chemistry is the science class that unfortunately gains a bad rep with students because of the math-related topics and rather abstract concepts.

When students have materials, however, chemistry is also the subject known for cool activities and exciting experiments.

I want my students to remain invested in science and chemistry through experimentation. I know hands-on learning will be the most profound type of learning. Students will learn the meaning of scientific experimentation and inquiry. Science is experimentation. Your donations will allow my students to experience science themselves and not read about it in a textbook. I am requesting basic laboratory supplies such as bunsen burners and chemical equipment so that we can do simple chemistry labs. I am hopeful that they will become inspired to choose science as a major in college. We need more of the next generation to get interested in the STEM courses.

High school chemistry is especially useful for all students whether they pursue a traditional college or a trade school. They learn how chemistry is the explanation for everyday things. No matter what career a student chooses --- everyone uses chemistry. From firefighters, hairdressers, artists, truck drivers, plumbers, chefs, everyone relies on chemistry to help them to perform their jobs. I do not want my students to be left behind because of the public school that they attend. Y
