Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a self-contained, special education class and my students have a variety of disabilities. My school is a high-needs school and my students deserve every opportunity available to help them succeed in anything they would want to accomplish. I am lucky enough to help them do this and be a part of their lives this year as we become a little "family".

They need to learn through different modalities because of their disabilities.

I want to make learning fun, exciting, enjoyable, and memorable for them. My challenge will be getting them to their grade level when many are behind. My scholars are very special children.

They all have different obstacles in their way, but come to school every day ready to learn. At times, they need constant praise and encouragement to get them back on track. It is a high-needs school where many kids are at a disadvantage.

My Project

Students will be coming back to the classroom after being away from school, many encountering a great deal of stress, hardship, and/or inconsistency during this time. Extra attention will be paid to supporting their emotional well-being as well as filling their toolboxes with strategies they can use to work towards self-regulation. A creative outlet and learning a new skill would be a great focus.

Although I cannot take away the uncertainty and instability that has come with COVID-19, the one thing I can make my students feel certain about is how much I care about their well-being and that I will do everything I can to make them feel safe and loved while they are at school.

My students will spend time developing ideas and designs using the Cricut Joy. I would like them to learn skills that will help them get college and career ready. The Materials for the Cricut Joy will be used for so many different projects over the years to come. One example would be to create original logos that then can be cut out of vinyl ordered and applied to various surfaces such as masks and T-shirts. The tools and weeding accessories help to make the design to perfection. Another idea would be to create a special item for themselves and family members. They will construct family logos to be put onto self-created cards and the insulated cups to be gifted to a family member. When creating a card on the card stock the special markers can be used as well.
