My Students

Every day when students enter my room, they are eager to get down to work and to learn about the next new story in American history! Whether it is learning about Native Americans, the 13 Colonies, or European explorers, my students have developed a passion for the early history of our country.

My 7th grade students are awesome.

We teach and learn in a Title One school in Brooklyn, NY. My students are very diverse and come from many different countries including Mexico, Yemen, Pakistan, Trinidad, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. My kids this year are some of the most thoughtful and hard working students I have ever taught in my seven years as a public school teacher. This school year has been an absolute blast because the kids are engaged in every lesson I teach them. These kids are the reason I love what I do.

My Project

Together, my students and I will be reading "Fighting Ground", a historical fiction novel written by Avi that shows what it's like to be a thirteen year-old kid during the time of the Revolutionary War. I read a class novel earlier in the year with my students. We read "Morning Girl" by Michael Dorris, which showed what it was like for a Taino family living in the Bahamas before Columbus arrived, and my students fell in love with the book. I want to recreate that same love with this new topic. My students will also be watching a PBS Documentary, entitled "The War That Made America" which will give them a good visual as to what it was like during the French and Indian War. Since it is halfway through the year, many of their notebooks are filling up and these new notebooks will help provide them with a resource they will need to finish off the year strong.

Instead of asking all of my students for a few dollars to purchase the books we need for our classroom, this project will help them save money for other things they will need.

My students' families struggle with making ends meet, and so far I have been able to provide them with all the necessary supplies they need for this school year. This project will help them finish off the year on a high note before they enter 8th grade!
