Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students can do real DNA research! We want to give student authentic science experience that will help prepare them for jobs in the biological fields.

Our students are recent immigrants from non-English speaking countries.

Their families are below the poverty line. While they lack resources, they have big dreams. Our school is a haven where we give them work on authentic projects and learn real world science in order to give them background to reach their dreams.

My Project

Micropipettors are tools to measure out small quantities of liquid. Microcentrifuge tubes are where DNA reactions take place. Floating racks allow the tubes to be submerged in warm water, so reactions can take place. Pestles help mix the chemicals. These are the essential tools in all DNA labs. Students will use the micropipettors to add, mix, and remove the solutions necessary to purify and amplify DNA. These supplies, along with other materials and equipment, will allow students to identify samples of animals, plants, and fungi using DNA barcoding. Through this project, they will learn about DNA and how scientists can use it and manipulate it to solve real world problems.

Very rarely do students learn DNA purification and amplification techniques in high school.

Few high schools have a working DNA lab. While our school is very limited in its resources, our teachers have a deep understanding of these techniques and a passion to bringing it to our students. Our students are curious and dedicated to doing real world science. All we are missing is the equipment. With it we will be able to train the next generation of geneticists.
