This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine living in NYC but because you go to school in the Bronx, you only have a 70% chance of graduating High School? Now imagine, add to this the fact that you came to High School speaking a language other than English- and your chances of graduation get even smaller.

I teach at a High School in the heart of the Bronx helping students who are learning English become college-ready in Math and Science.

A lot of our students move quickly into learning English- even if they struggle with literacy in their home language. Although they enter our school with little limited English, we join them in their goal of graduating High School in just 4 years. They are hard-working and want to make a better future - for themselves, and our city.

My Project

Students walk into my class and grab their notebooks filled with nice paper and folders that help separate this week's work from all that we have already learned. They take a post-it note and begin to answer the day's diagnostic question. Then, they ask their table how they answered the question and what methods they could use to solve it in a different way. Then, based on what they have already learned in the first 5 min of class, we break into groups to work on the next steps for everyone's individualized learning.

All of these activities are only possible with the supplies needed to keep a classroom organized and running.

Having these supplies means that my class can operate smoothly and we won't lose valuable time (I only have 45 min a day to teach them all they need to know about Algebra!).
