Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have nothing. Our school was flooded and destroyed by Irene. We have been depending entirely on donations to get the year started. Reading is their greatest struggle. I manipulate their love of movies and hip-hop to motivate them to try. It works.

My students are between 10-15 years of age, urban, special needs students with significant impairments.

The school is in a poor urban district in NJ. My students are housed in an office building which has no gym, no playground and no lunch room (they walk around the corner for lunch). They are generally shy, largely due to the fact that other students tease them for being in special education. However, in the classroom, they are superstars and workhorses in my class. Through drama, they are learning to read and build self-esteem.

My Project

While many struggle with even the most basic sight words, I have discovered that using music, dance and theater, has motivated even the most struggling student to want to try. When a fourteen year old child cannot tell you (reliably) whether "cat" rhymes with "hat," how can you teach that child? To make the grueling challenge of decoding exciting, we pretend to be stars on stage. I intend to use the reading theater books and early reading materials to act out stories and create songs with students, largely through puppet theater but also through my imaginary life-sized classroom stage.

My project is important because it works.

I have been using music and drama to teacher for the last two years (I use to teach only math and science). Using dramatic arts and music is a strong motivator. Even my lowest and most defiant students, want to participate in literacy when the Hip-hop-apotamus v the Rhyme-nocerous during our class "poetry [phonics] slams." I have never seen anything work better than music and dramatic arts, to motivate non-reading, 13-year olds, to try.
