Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are part of a bilingual immersion program, and I see a strong need to strengthen their learning and appreciation for bilingualism. Book clubs have been a powerful way to express their love for reading in Spanish. However, the books provided at school are often outdated and damaged, limiting their access to engaging and relevant materials.

This project will allow me to provide fresh, high-quality Spanish books that actively engage my students.

Exposure to these books will help expand their vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, and support their success in our dual-language program. Through book club discussions, I aim to build their confidence in sharing thoughts and developing analytical thinking skills.

After discussions, students will collaborate on activities designed to deepen their understanding. For example:

- Creative Summaries; Retelling the story in their own words to reinforce comprehension of themes, plot, and key events.

- Character Wheels; Analyzing characters’ personalities, roles, and purposes in the story.

-Alternate Endings; Encouraging imagination and critical thinking by exploring new possibilities beyond the text.

One of the most special things about my students is that being bilingual is their superpower! I want to celebrate and strengthen this unique part of their identity, through meaningful and enriching reading experiences.
