My Students

I am a special education teacher teaching a K-2 self-contained bridge class. Students in my class have a variety of diagnosis such as ASD, ADHD, Speech or Language Impairments, and Learning Disabilities. Each student is unique in their personalities with learning needs. Most of all, my students perform best when they are able to embrace instruction through hands-on activities that extend beyond just paper and pencil worksheets.

My Project

To keep my students healthy and safe due to COVID-19 concerns, I would like to provide individual materials for each student when they are learning either in the classroom or at home. I've chosen specific materials to support students’ individual needs that will be used in daily instruction for learning foundational skills. My students learn best with hands-on materials and these materials would support learning everyday in math activities, writing activities, and creative projects.

Fully stocked supply kits will provide each student with learning materials of their own as they learn about responsibility and accountability through the school year.

Each student will receive their very own pencil case complete with pencils, erasers, sharpeners, crayons, dry-erase markers, glue, and scissors! Seat sacks can keep students organized throughout the school day while labels would help students keep track of their materials.

The primary composition books will encourage students to tap into their story-telling abilities as they write and draw about all they know. Wikisticks can be used in a multitude of ways - as a fun boundary reminder on writing lines to improve letter sizing, practice letter formation in phonics activities, or line by line reading trackers. Math doesn’t have to be hard! Not when students can use ten-frames, counters, and unifix cubes to discover all the different ways to compose or decompose a large number.

To ease confusion and anxiety that may accumulate for students during the back and forth of school and home instruction, I would like to provide each student their own laminated editable visual schedule. Students can reproduce an orderly schedule by placing subject/activities labels on arranged velcro spots to preserve a sense of stability wherever they are. This can also be beneficial for families to reinforce expectations for school and home routines.
