My Students

Our scholars are explorers: they seek to know more about the world around them in order to better understand their own place on this planet. Outgoing, inquisitive, reflective, quirky, and kind: our students bring many different strengths to the classroom. These kids love science, and not just the explosions/chemicals/excitement part of science; they thrive on investigation and experimentation. They strive to find the truth through scientific inquiry.

Our small project-based school allows our students to learn authentically and personally, and they rise to the challenges we give them.

These young scholars come from urban Baltimore and are eager to take what they learn in the classroom into their communities and homes.

My Project

The materials I have requested are critical to our classroom's success. Each day our students are delving deep into their work, which means they are utilizing a variety of materials. The crux of our science classroom is our interactive notebooks: these important tools require daily writing, cutting, gluing and colored labeling of scientific diagrams. You would be shocked how quickly a middle school classroom goes through glue! We have already used up over one hundred glue sticks in the first two months of school. And don't even get me started on how many pencils we have used!

Another critical need in our classroom is cleaning supplies for our laboratory investigations.

This trimester we are growing bacteria in our classroom! We are in need of more cleaning wipes and towels to keep the students and the room sanitary while we are learning.

Finally, our classroom is build on constructivist learning: students work together to develop their own understanding of scientific phenomena through discussions, arguments, and investigations. Much of this work is done on table-sized whiteboards to allow students to continue to revise their work and make their thinking visible. This weekly work requires many whiteboard markers to be replenished as they are used up. For a classroom to truly succeed it needs materials to keep it up and running. As a teacher I want to focus on pushing my students to the next level, not stress about whether or not we have enough supplies for everyone.
