Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students I teach are enthusiastic, curious, and passionate about learning. They love rewriting stories for Writer's Workshop on special paper, then displaying it for their classmates to see. They enjoy making art for our classroom, their parents, and themselves.

Nearly all of the children I teach here at our Title I school in the inner city come from hard-working immigrant parents that strongly value education.

This year I have students from Kazakhstan, Russia, Nigeria, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and even a few born right here in the U.S.A. Although many of my students come from backgrounds of substantial economic hardship, you wouldn't know it by looking at their eager faces. They love coming to school and learning new things especially when there's an opportunity for their creativity to shine!

My Project

I have 30 5th graders this year who love writing even more when they know they will be able to choose a special piece of paper on which to rewrite their rough drafts for display on the bulletin board. My burgeoning writers also appreciate a ready supply of good mechanical pencils so their words flow across the paper.

During student-led conferences having a real portfolio of their writing makes them feel like real writers.

I reuse work portfolios each year, but last year I had fewer students so I need more plastic envelopes for this year.

During Art, I don't have enough plastic water jars for every child to have their own. Having individual paint palettes for each artist will make mixing new colors a breeze and won't muddy up their existing watercolor pans.

Educational budget cuts in our public schools mean no extra money for supplies like the ones I'm seeking. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you in advance for the kind donations that will help to keep our little classroom in the big city afloat. We couldn't do it without you!
