My Students

Think back on your own kindergarten or early childhood experience. Did you love coming to school, listening to stories, playing at recess or building with blocks? The magic of early childhood is not only gaining the skills required to be a 21st-century learner but supporting our youngest learners with developing the executive functioning skills children need to thrive. The guided inquiry and magic of play will create lifelong learners who can collaborate and take risks. Research shows students who experience a quality early childhood education have stronger problem-solving skills, and the social-emotional skills needed to succeed in today’s job market. When children are nurtured as well as taught to read, write, and think critically, their growth can be endless. I love teaching transitional kindergarten at a public elementary school in Los Angeles.

Our students come from a low socioeconomic background; all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and the majority of the students are English language learners.

However, statistics don’t tell the whole story. My students are inquisitive, hard-working, and caring. They will count, read, write, but most important, become kind humans ready to make this world a better place!

My Project

School is meant to be fun! A classroom is filled with lots to explore and do. Classrooms need to be stuffed with hands-on materials. This is the students’ classroom where nothing should be off limits. Materials need to be stored in open shelves and out for students to use daily. The goal of classroom supplies is to use them up, not bring them out for special occasions. Learning is the special occasion.

Bright colored masking tape, special smelly markers, slime and glitter crayons are magical for four and five year olds to have at their disposal!

Students and teachers can work together to create a classroom community where those special items are cherished and used throughly. My project includes a variety of basic classroom supplies. There are art supplies that always need to be replenished every year. Things like markers, tape and a crayon sharpener to keep crayons lasting longer are classroom true blue favorites.

Office supplies like a stapler, name tags, birthday stickers, colored staples, carpet sweeper, Kleenx and labels are items that are always in high demand and low supply at my school. My project also includes a few new beginning of the year storybooks that have characters that reflect my students. I am always trying to do better in my literature choices to reflect windows and mirrors for my little learners.
