My Students

Our classroom is an inclusive one which means some of the students are high performing general education students while others are overcoming various challenges as special education students. Some of these challenges include autism, speech and language impairments and visual impairments.

It's wonderful to see the students in our class all accept each other and learn from one another despite their differences.

Besides their learning differences, our school's population is also very diverse. Located in the heart of Queens, NY we have many immigrant students who have recently moved to America. On the other hand, we also have many students whose parents and grandparents were raised right in Queens and even attended our school!

My Project

After reading the ten winning Science Everywhere projects, I was so motivated to find a way to help my students engage in more math and science activities at home with their families. Mrs. Mianowski's project, "Marvelous Math Take Home Bags" inspired me to create my own Super Stem Take Home Bags for my students. This project was a great fit for my classroom because my students are very eager to share what we are learning in school with their families. Once a month we have a Family Friday at school, and I can see the students' motivation increase when their families are there participating in the classroom with us. I would love for this motivated learning to spill over into the weekend as well!

Therefore, Each Friday students will take home a math game and a related STEM book to teach their families what we have been learning in the classroom.

Having these math folder games and STEM books available for students to take home will allow students to not only show off their knowledge and skills to their families, but also encourage families to spend valuable quality time with each other. Students can teach their parents and siblings the rules and skills needed to play the math games and feel empowered and successful. In addition, having a related STEM book to read together would be a great way to end the weekend.

When there is a home and school connection, great things happen. I think these Super Stem Take Home Bags are the perfect balance of fun and rigor and they will allow families to laugh and learn together.
