My Students

"I get it!" are the words I love to hear from my students. Teaching in a low-income, high drug and gang activity area presents its challenges. However, the students love school because it is a safe environment where they can count on support and attention. They love science because they get to use their hands to watch chemicals fizz and bubble. They get to dissect sheep eyes (when we have the materials), build their own looms and make a woven project to take home.

It is imperative for these students to feel successful and find employment to break the poverty cycle.

The problems arise when I do not have the materials to reach this goal. Science needs to be filled with hands-on engaging projects, but those projects need materials. I can teach a variety of topics/units with one activity, but when I do not have the supplies for even one project, the students get deflated. "Is that because we are in the poor area?" is a question with which I am all too familiar. It is true and yet I do not want their dreams to be thwarted because of their socio-economic status. Please help me break this cycle!

My Project

Using Spheros to teach coding is a unique and innovative way to introduce students to the world of computers outside of video games. Learning to code is a skill which can set these students apart when it comes to job applications and career advancement. These students are not exposed to coding unless it is in school as they do not have the funding or the motivation for summer camps and activities. Lower socio-economic students need to have employable skills to feel successful in the world. Give them a chance to succeed!
