My Students

Stephen Hawking once said, "Whether you want to uncover the secrets of the universe, or you want to pursue a career in the 21st century, basic computer programming is an essential skill to learn." With this quote in mind, I want to bring the world of robotics to my classroom.

My students are excited to come to school each day and to learn from one another.

They enjoy working in collaborative groups and sharing their knowledge with each other. They enjoy using their critical thinking skills to evaluate new information and integrating the arts to show their learning. They get very excited any time we can use technology in the classroom and they aren't afraid to try something new.

My Project

In our classroom we have a saying; mistakes are proof you are trying. I think trial and error relationship between coding and the end result are a perfect fit for this saying. Learning to program Sphero will teach my students to collaborate and apply their critical thinking skills. They will try something new and they will celebrate when it works. But, more importantly, they will put their heads back together to find a new solution when it doesn't. We will be able to integrate Sphero in all areas of the curriculum He will be used as a writing prompt. He will star in student created films. He will be used to prove math concepts such as why the degree of an angle matters. He will inspire students to engineer race courses for him to complete. He will create original artwork by rolling through paints while wearing different covers. There are many ways we can combine the language of coding with our current curriculum.

This project will give my students a fun, hands-on introduction to computer programming.

Coding helps students build skills that are integral to becoming 21st century learners. It provides real-world experiences for students to collaborate and apply their critical thinking skills. It creates a sense of community as we all learn this language together. It encourages creativity and allows students to have new experiences that will help prepare them for tomorrow's work force
