This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach science to grades 9, 10, and 11 at a Title I school. My students are currently taking Living Environment or reviewing for the state exam in the subject. Living Environment is a combination of biology and ecology. Majority of my students are Special Education and/or English Language Learners. This means they benefit from additional supports and hands on learning experiences

My students are some of the most inquisitive teenagers you could ever meet.

Unfortunately, I do not have all the resources I need to help answer their questions. We have been slowly building a lab room for the special education students and we are in need of additional supplies.

The pocket microscopes will be used by students to examine cells. We will be looking at cells going through mitosis as well as comparing cell types. There is a lab all students must complete that involves looking at plant stems under a microscope. The large microscope will be connected to the smart board so students have a model to view. I will use it to show them what they are looking for under their slides and students will also be allowed to use it to show the class what they discovered.

I hope to teach my students how to prepare their own slides for viewing as they develop their own labs and begin to engage in scientific inquiry at a higher level.
