My Students

Do you remember what it felt like as a child to finally be able to pick up a book and read it on you own? My students are eager to learn how to read, but could use additional resources to help them add to the number of words they recognize by sight.

I teach a classroom full of energetic first graders at a Title 1 school in a small town in Alabama.

Many students have very limited resources available to them outside of school and look forward to their time at school each day. My students are eager to learn to read and get excited when they reach their goals.

My Project

Learning centers are a crucial time our our day. During learning centers, students are exploring and applying skills taught during our literacy time. Learning centers allows me to provide differentiated instruction to my other students through small reading groups. I am requesting Lakeshore Learning's I Can Learn 300 Sight Words Activity Centers and the Magnetic Sight-Word Sentence Builder. Sight words are an important building block to becoming a great reader. The more words a student recognizes by sight, the more fluent they become. The activity centers allow my students to have independent practice during learning centers. It provides activities for 300 sight words. In addition, it will allow the centers to be differentiated to my students' needs. Activities can be provided based on the sight words they know. The sentence building activity will then allow my students to apply their knowledge to sentences. Together these activities will allow my students to grow as readers.

The skills these materials provide will lay a foundation that will allow them to grow as better readers for years to come.
