This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A classroom set of unpitched percussion instruments is incomplete without various shakers and scrapers. Currently, my students only have one pair of maracas and one guiro. With our standard class size being around 30-35 their opportunity to play the shakers and scrapers is highly limited.

My students are very excited and ready to learn all they can about music.

As a result of our approximately 96% low-socio economic level, their opportunities to experience and learn about music are almost entirely limited to what they receive at school. I also have an extremely high number of students who qualify as LEP or Limited English Proficient. As a result, it is quite common for the music classroom to be one of the first places where they feel successful in school.

My Project

Imagine a classroom filled with first graders where there are enough unpitched percussion instruments for everyone to use. This classroom would spend more time actually making music together rather than spending so much time organizing and managing turns. These first graders would spend their time in music using our shakers and scrapers to tell stories and to accompany their own singing. Because these instruments are used regularly in every grade, their use becomes more complex over time so that by the time these first graders get to the fifth grade they will be ready to incorporate their shakers and scrapers into more complex musical ensembles that they have either learned or composed.

I feel as though my music classroom is not just a place to teach my students about music, but it is also a place to encourage them and inspire them to keep learning and to keep working to overcome all of the things that might get in the way of their reaching their own personal goals for the future.

Ensuring that my music classroom is stocked with appropriate, safe and undamaged instruments is one tangible means of enabling my students to succeed.
