My Students

My students live in a diverse neighborhood in the north Bronx in New York City. They are from Bangladesh, Ghana, Yemen, Dominican Republic, Harlem, and more. What they have in common is their curiosity! They are smart, engaged and engaging, thoughtful, and always ready to take on new challenges. My job is ESL teacher, which means that I'm helping them find ways to express themselves, and I love getting to know them. They inspire me every day and I can't wait to see where they go.

My Project

Welcoming students back to in-person learning will be both exciting and challenging. I am eager to provide activities that will stimulate my students' minds in different directions than in their core subjects. In the past, we have made jewelry, decorated t-shirts, and created book art.

Designing and sewing one's own clothes is a magical process, and this will be a great way to transition back into school.

I am excited to watch my students draft a pattern with their own measurements on paper, use the iron to smooth edges, the sewing machine to stitch, and the Sashiko thread to embellish. This will be a perfect complement after the school day to their academic courses-- although sewing does incorporate math!
